Tom is a Missouri Showme - born and raised in Kansas City. He spent much of his upbringing roaming the halls of the Kansas City Art Institute and the adjacent and beautiful Nelson Art Gallery where he knew every piece. His uncle Harry Wood, an early cartoonist and 60 years art editor of the KC Star, was instrumental in both orgs, and helped Tom become an oilfield geologist in Oklahoma and Wyoming.
He and lovely wife Maryanna (Monk) went to San Francisco, where she rode the cablecar to work every day, and also Tokyo in the Army where Tom made maps from aerial photos and they climbed Fuji Varna.. But on the side Tom studied art under watercolorist Jack Vallee and then headed west into Colorado with beautiful kids Laura and Cate.
Tom moved to Evergreen where he was on the fire department for 8 years and the Metro Dist. for 30 and formed the Evergreen Artists and with the Sternbergs the Art for the Mountain Community and the Sculpture Walk and did their first sculpture for the library. Worked on getting a new art center on various committees for 25. Did big pieces for in front of the Art Center, the Lakehouse, the Water plant on the lake, the sculpture Park in Loveland, some in Denver and also KC and Santa Fe, some churches, and others.
Tom took may classes at Foothills in Golden, through their splendid program of requiring jurors to give a one week class in sculpture. These were the best of the best! This included people like Irwin Hauer - 30 year head of the Art Dept.at Yale, and a glider pilot who took Tom up flying. He taught a drawing class at his house for many years and also taught drawing at the art center. He currently runs and teaches a sculpture group from the model, the Warehouse Gang, at his house which he has taught for about 40 years. He additionally has had many shows. the latest opening May 11 in the new art center.
Tom has trained several of the sculpture artists currently exhibiting at Mystic Trinity.
